ThermoWorks The Original Cooking Thermometer/Timer NEW AND IMPROVED

The original version of this product has probably been the most widely chosen oven-cooking alarm in the market. It's not easy to improve on that but ThermoWorks has. From customer comments, the most frequently suggested new feature has been an On/Off switch to save on battery life. (The old one couldn't be shut off but batteries lasted months.) So, they have updated the housing to a more robust design and added a slide switch so the unit can be powered off. The proven circuit is the same and the button arrangement is slightly improved. The well-loved simplicity has been kept so you won't need to find the instructions each time you set an alarm. The new stylish housing folds the display up for counter use or flat for less obtrusive magnetic mounting to an appliance door.

Cook's Illustrated said this: "The best of the bunch, an easy to use thermometer from ThermoWorks..." and "This user-friendly model allows you to view both time and temperature simultaneously and is free of the annoying and unnecessary USDA recommended presets for various types of meat that are all too common in other brands.

 "Everything as promised" 2009-09-18
By MT Pockets (Big Sky)
The first time I used this I set the temperature and forgot to turn on the alarm. Luckily I happened to get concerned and checked on it before the dish got too hot.

The alarm is loud enough to be heard from a couple rooms away and setup is simple.

I really like the idea that the probe is replaceable and so I will order a couple so that when I destroy the first one I won't have to wait for a replacement.

The only down side is the lack of strength in the magnets, but I couldn't see rating it lower just for that,

"The best digital thermometer??? I think not." 2009-08-14
By Terry M. Edward (south Louisiana)
This is an excellent digital thermometer. The braided stainless steel cord connecting the probe to the display is far superior to the plainly insulated versions out there. It's functioning as a digital thermometer is absolutely perfect. However..... we use our digital thermometers as timers in the kitchen and this one is clearly a second tier product with its ONLY countdown timer. I would DEFINITELY recommend it but would not buy it again due to the timer restrictions. To leave that functionality out in this day and age is perplexing. Still, the quality is excellent and the probe/cord is the best I have ever had. Buy it if you never use a count up timer function in your kitchen, it would then rank at the top of the heap.

 "Excellent internal thermometer" 2009-06-30
By M. McDonald
Purchased this item after reading a cooksillustrated review of internal meat thermometers. It's an excellent product. There have been no flying batteries or cord twisting or inaccurate readings- just well cooked meat with an easy to set up alarm and easy to hear alarm, which is great because I can't rely on cooking times with my "vintage" oven.

I bought my ThermoWorks through Amazon at TheHandyHouse and love it! The delivery was really fast and with free shipping it was the same cost as the one mentioned by the first reviewer as cheaper. So many websites offer cheaper items and then soak you with shipping charges. I think the service from Amazon and HandyHouse is excellent. Buy here, I do. HandyHouse has some really good buys and free shipping is the way to go! I bought some pans from there and free shipping made a BIG difference.

Buy Low Price From Here Now

This is the original Super-Fast Thermapen in the color red. Originally designed for professional users, the Super-Fast Thermapen is chosen by restaurant chains, health inspectors, quality managers and chefs all over the world. The clever pocket design replaces more costly and bulky handheld thermometers while using the same professional thermocouple technology. The Super-Fast Thermapen displays actual internal food or liquid temperatures in only 3 or 4 seconds. Other thermometers make you wait another 20 seconds or more to catch up to the Thermapen. That's a huge difference in a fast paced commercial kitchen or when you're over a hot grill. If you're cooking an expensive cut of meat you want a perfect outcome. You don't want a slow temperature reading that might be misinterpreted and your meat overcooked. A must-have for the serious cook, restaurants or professional chef. So easy to use! The instrument is switched on by unfolding the probe whereby the display illuminates. Folding the probe back will turn off the unit. The Thermapen will shut itself off automatically after a few minutes if left on. When using, the very tip should be immersed or penetrated to at least 1/8 inch. The plastic housing it not waterproof, so care should be taken when cleaning. It comes with a battery so you can use immediately. Ask about the protective vinyl wallet case or the leather case, sold separately.

"Well worth the extra cost." 2009-08-12
By J. Wise (Folsom, CA)
Foodies know that the proper temperature is the key to cooking. Relying on the "feel" of the meat has never got me very far but the temperature never lies. These thermometers are the best at quickly and accurately reading the temperature.

Taking a New York, Rib Eye or Filet off at 131 and letting it sit for 5 minute will yield a perfect steak every time. Once you learn the temps for each type of meat, you will never over or under cook your meat again.

Fast, accurate and easy to use. The only problem with the Thermapen is that if you get certain parts a little wet it has to completely dry before it can be used again.

Our last kitchen thermometer finally gave out, and the battery could not be replaced. So I decided to splurge, and was rewarded by finding the Thermapen $10-15 cheaper, including shipping. Go to the Thermaworks website to purchase this for $74, any color. A new splash-proof model is out that is $96, so they're discounting the original model.

"Excellent product - why did I wait so long?" 2009-06-05
By Gadgeteer (Los Angeles)
I knew about this for a few years but kept resisting the relatively high cost. I bought a few "instant" thermometers along the way, but they all failed miserably at being "instant."

You really can't comprehend how useful it is to have such a quick temp reading until you cook with one of these. Like another reviewer said - this would make an incredible gift, because lots of people would love to have this (they may not realize this until they use it a few times), but not many would pay the high price for "just a thermometer."

"Wireless Meat Thermometer: Ok, but could be better" 2009-09-10
By Vincent Guaglianone (SF Bay Area)
I really like the two probe feature and it works accurately and reliably as a digital thermometer. What is poor about this product is the wireless feature. The range is so short that other than sitting on a chair a few feet away, it really isn't much good. That said, I like sitting on my patio swing with a beer watching the smoker from a distance(10-20ft), so I'm not totally disappointed. It just would be better if I could go into the house and walk around while I'm smoking stuff.

I think I only paid $35 for this, so it's not so bad, in the context of what a "Green Egg" costs. It just could be better. I like the idea of a wireless device and before I bought this one again I'd shop around to see if there is one with better range, but I wouldn't pay much more for it.

 "Maverick remote thermometer" 2009-09-08
By Mary Kay
The remote works very erratically and only at a very short distance. Practically useless. I bought this product to replace one from Williams Sonoma that I really liked. I had fried the probe by using it in the grill.

I chose the Maverick because I read that it was the same mechanism as the William Sonoma one, which I really like much better. Fortunately, the two probes work with the William Sonoma product, so I guess I bought two very expensive probes. I'm hoping that they last longer than the original one because they are encased in metal. I decided not to return the item because I really do need the probes and the base unit works.

I use my all the time, just remember the sequence. Turn on the main unit to temp, then turn on the remote, then turn the main unit off and back onto temp.

I use mine all the time, for cooking and reheating leftovers. No guessing on when something is hot enough. They just need to come up with a version that's more reliable and allow people to buy replacement probes.

By A Bryan (CA, USA)
I really wanted this thing to work. When I first got it the thermometer worked locally but the remote didn't reach all the way to our kitchen. It would work for a minute then the temps would freeze and I'd have to go reset the transmitter and receiver.

Tried it again today because it's hot as hell outside and I didn't want to go out to check temps every 20 minutes. The probes are off from each other by about 20 degrees and I cannot even get a consistent signal to our den which is the closest room to the bbq. I am resorting to binoculars to see the built in gauge on my smoker. It's a much less hi-tech solution but way more reliable and infinitely less frustrating.

 "Reading not consistent." 2009-09-14
By Mark (Bend, OR)
My thermometer will not stay calibrated. Might be user error, I don't know. I have tried checking temps in ice water and boiling water(even allowing for barometric pressure and altitude for boiling water). Here is what happens...I insert the probe in the water then adjust the face using the handy tool molded into the thermometer case. Holding the thermometer in the water for awhile to verify that the reading does not change, maybe 2-4 minutes. I remove it, let it cool and reinsert it and the temp is off by as much as 6-7 degrees. Sometimes, the temp is correct. When I received it almost two months ago I calibrated it, but never reinserted it multiple times into the water to check it. Just a couple weeks ago, I was measuring some temps when some friends disagreed with my results. I told them I was confident the temp was accurate as I had calibrated the tool. Kind of embarassing to double check it and find out that I was incorrect. Hopefully, I can exchange it for one that is consistently accurate. If I can, I will update this review with the exchange process.

 "Nice thermometer, nice price" 2009-09-12
By Too Tall (New Rochelle, NY United States)
This thermometer works great for setting my small wine refrigerator to the right temperature. Wine does taste better if it is not refrigerated too cold. The thermometer is universal enough to be use from room to room to check AC and heating, or to check temperatures in the freezer as well as a refrigerator. When it is out of use, I keep it on my desk as a indoor thermometer.

 "Good product" 2009-08-01
By John J. Kundrat (Hilton Head Island, SC)
I purchased this to use when microwaving frozen dinners. With the recent salmonella and e-coli problems, and now that some packages indicate that the contents should be heated to 165 F degrees, I wanted to see how my 700 watt oven was performing. This thermometer seems to work very well.

Customer Buzz
"Not very accurate, but it is precise." 2009-07-09
By Michael L. Nuss
It registers that water boils at 202 degrees yet also registers that ice water is 42 degrees. This means that a calibration won't help its case in being universally accurate. But it does read the same value every time and is precise with its own eschewed readings. This means that it will read 202 degress every time for boiling water. The good news is that meat temperatures are in between the extremes and are more universally accurate.

I use this for measuring the temperature of water to brew coffee and tea and just add about ten degrees to the reading to attain the correct values.

Its cheap and can be calibrated for easily. If you only use it for measuring hot water then calibrate it to the boiling temp of water. If you use it for cold items, calibrate it with ice water. If you use it for a variety of things then just factor in those systematic errors.

 "Internal face spins around" 2009-07-01
By L. Niland (West Hartford, CT)
I had the opportunity to use this thermometer once after losing my previous meat thermometer of 15 years.

The second time I went to use this thermometer, the internal face spun around freely inside the enclosure. Obviously this makes it impossible to tell the temperature and rendered the thermometer useless.

I always try to remember that you get what you pay for. For this product it's sadly too true.

"Easy to use, but always on :(" 2009-09-17
By Aileen Chen (SF Bay Area)
Great digital thermometer. I had a Taylor thermometer whose temp sensor I ruined by putting in my BBQ grill...and I definitely won't be doing that with this. The unit itself is very well made. The read out is easy to use, and the temp shows up very quickly. My mom loves the timer functionality - she uses it at all the time w/ the probe removed, so this is a good multi-functional gadget!

I am a little bummed that this has no off-switch...I feel like its wasting away because it usually sits in my drawer, but otherwise it's an excellent product that has never led me astray!

General advice:

Also, the probe is the same as the Taylor - I took this and plugged it into my other one and it worked fine.

If you are looking to replace your thermometer because you burned out a sensor, just buy the probe...don't bother with getting a new unit.

 "Good versatile timer" 2009-08-29
By C. K. Morrison (Tulsa, OK)
I like this timer/thermometer very much, but this is the second one I've bought since the temperature probe of the last one was so fragile it broke with minimal use. The replacement probe cost almost as much as a whole new unit (especially since it didn't qualify for Prime shipping, and the whole new unit did) so I just bought a second one. This one came with a probe cord wrapped in rubber instead of the woven wire of the old one. Maybe that will be more durable. When it works, it works very well.

 "Worked a few times..." 2009-08-23
By M. Snyder (PA)
This thing is crap. It worked 4 times, on the 5th time (2 months after purchase), it started displaying erratic temperatures, changing drastically every few seconds.

Polder tells me I have to return it to Amazon, and Amazon says it is after the 30 day window for returns.

So I am stuck with an expensive fridge magnet.

DO NOT buy ANY Polder product, the stuff is junk, and they don't stand behind their products. Spend a little more and go for quality instead.

 "Love my Polder" 2009-08-11
By P. Smith
I highly recommend this product. I've used this Polder Original Cooking All in One Timer/Thermoneter quite a few times since I purchased it about a month or so ago. So far I'm extremely happy with it. The only thing that would make it better is if you could use it when you're broiling meat. When my broiled meat looks ready I just take the broiler pan out and then insert the probe to check the temperature of my meat. Meat and poultry comes out perfectly every time. No more guesswork. I noticed that some reviewers said this was a delicate item so I've taken very good care of it. I clean the sensor probe by hand, being careful not to get the connection to the cord wet. I put 3 push pins in an arched shape on my corkboard and hang the probe across the pins so the wire doesn't get bent. Figured my gadget draw was not the place for it. I'll be using it all the time so it's right there for me to grab. I expect to get years of use out of it. If any problems come up, I'll update my review.

 "Not what's pictured" 2009-09-15
By D. R. Coulter (Murfreesboro, TN United States)
The actual operation of the thermometer is fine, but what I recieved is not at all what is displayed in the picture that is shown. What I recieved was a rather cumbersomely sized, wedge-shaped device with the readout located on the side of the instrument, not on the top (end) as shown. Really a bit large to carry around in ones shirt pocket without noticing its bulk. Carrying it a tool pouch might be risky as well. With the controls located on the side, there is the possibility of other tools coming in contact with the on/off switch, thereby energizing the unit accidently and draining the battery. Not suitable for my intended purpose, however, my wife is now the proud owner of a very nice digital thermometer for the kitchen.

 "Taylor 9842 pleases" 2009-09-12
By Wm D. Hutcheson (Dahlonega, GA)
The Taylor 9842 instant read thermometer performs better than its price. I enjoy using a smoker and find the use of a thermometer important, especially when I have different cuts of meat on the smoker at the same time. I've used several of the lower-end thermometers. I was looking for a faster reading thermometer without having to pay for the highly touted, expensive ($80+) instant read thermometer. I have been very please with the Taylor. I have paid more for thermometers than I paid for the Taylor and but I haven't had any other thermometer that out performed this one. The temperature reading takes only about eight to ten seconds.

This is actually the fourth one that I've bought, but that's not because my first one broke, it's because I've given three as gifts. I've had mine since 2007(?), use it several times a week, and the original battery is still kicking. This guy is super versatile (making yogurt? bread? chicken? candy? burgers? need the ambient temperature? no problem!). It's easy to clean, works in F and C, and has a wide temperature range. It also shuts off automatically after 10 minutes if you accidentally leave it on (but the temperature has to be relatively stable for it to shut off). Love it.

 "Great expectations...that remain unfufilled" 2009-07-16
By Tiffany Mitchell (Seattle, WA)
I have been searching for a reliable, instant readout digital thermometer for a while now. I don't expect to find one that will survive a dishwasher or a nuclear holocaust; but I would hope at the least that it would survive hand washing and become a reliable part of my kitchen for the next year or so.

Unfortunately, what I got was a cute, bright colored thermometer that died in less than 5 uses. I never submerged it in water; I always turned the unit off when not using it. I used it for less than a minute each time.

I figured that it was something I did. Maybe it got hit by some stray bit of water (I had no idea that it was meant to be waterproof and had been treating it with kid gloves). It wasn't until I went online to buy a new one that I even found out that it was supposed to be waterproof.

At $13-$15 dollars retail, I figure that my instant readouts cost about $2.50 to $3 dollars each.

 "Works great." 2009-08-30
By D. Buhler (Abbotsford, BC, Canada)
Wish it was a little bit longer, but it works as advertised. Quick to read the temperature.

It's made cooking much MUCH easier. It really should be a kitchen essential.

It takes a while to learn where to poke to get the most accurate temperature readings, but it seems to do a pretty good job of detecting right at the tip. With a bit of trial and error, you'll wonder how you ever lived without one.

BTW, the suggested temperatures that come with most thermometers will result in most meat being overcooked. Safety/flavor trade-off I guess.

 "Great quick-read thermometer" 2009-08-05
By Pen Name (Fairbanks, Alaska)
This is the new version of the CDN Proaccurate Stainless Digital Thermometer, which is very well reviewed on Amazon. That model (DTQ450) has been discontinued and replaced with this model (DTQ450X). This is the first quick-read thermometer I've owned for cooking. If you don't have a quick-read, I highly recommend it. Traditional thermometers can take up to a minute to read temperature. This CDN model provides a temperature reading within about 2-3 seconds. That is extremely convenient compared to a traditional thermometer. The form factor is fairly nice. The thermometer is small (6.5" long), and the readout is not too big, maybe a little larger than a quarter. The buttons are easy to press and the readout is easy to view. The stem is made of stainless steel and it feels fairly solidly built. It can be switched between metric and English units as well.

When actually using the thermometer, don't stick the entire stem into your food like I did for a week. It will give you an inaccurate reading. Just place the very tip of the stem in your food about 1/2" in and it will read. The only possible problem I can see with this is that you might not be able to check the temperature in the very middle of your food if you have a thick piece of meat.

Length: 6.5"

Temperature range: -40 to 350F

Instant Read: <3 seconds.

Cleaning: Just wipe clean with damp cloth. Comes with a case to protect the stem.

Special Features: Shatterproof; auto-off option (cuts off automatically after 10 minutes)
