"Good Thermometer, Terrible battery replacement" 2009-10-08
By Timothy Raleigh (Oakville, Ontario Canada)
The Taylor 508 thermometer was great until I had to change the battery. Unless you have a set of jewelers screwdrivers and are very careful forget about using this thermometer after the battery dies. It's not water tight, and it shorts out if any water or moisture gets inside. If you have to change the battery you need to remove two screws. One is underneath the rubber back plate and then there is another inside the unit holding the metal contact for the battery. Both these screws are tiny and difficult to put back into the unit. The battery contact plate itself is a strange contraption with two flanges that must be tucked under the frame that surrounds the battery. This cover must contact the body of the thermometer and therefor must be securely fastened with the tiny screw. After one battery change, the hole for the tiny screw that holds the battery cover on gets stripped rendering the unit useless. I did like the instant readout when this thermometer worked but there are better ones out there.

 "OK Thermometer" 2009-07-10
By B. Hooke (Rhode Island, USA)
I've had this thermometer for almost 2 years and it has served me reasonably well. It is not brilliant but it has gotten the job done. Then I took it out one day and it would not turn on. After much fiddling I figured out how to get at the battery, got a replacement battery and installed it. Still nothing. After a good bit of fiddling and taking the battery in and out it suddenly started working. For those who want to try to replace the battery here is how I did it:

1. Gently pry up the SOFT rubber cover on the underside of the thermometer. Slide this off the probe.

2. Unscrew the tiny Phillips head screw hidden under this cover.

3. Then gently pry the hard plastic back off the thermometer using a flat screwdriver inserted into the notch in the side of the thermometer.

4. Now unscrew the tiny Phillips head screw that holds down the metal cover over the battery and work that cover off so that you can take out the old battery.

5. Note which way up the battery is installed so you can install the new battery the same way up.

6. Install the new battery and screw down the metal battery holder.

7. Test the thermometer to make sure it turns on. If it does not, check to make sure the battery is in the right way up and that all internal screws are firmly tightened down (don't overdo it or you will probably strip the threads).

8. Once the thermometer turns on, reinstall the hard plastic back, the final screw, and lastly the rubber cover.

I get the sense that this battery is not really designed to be replaced but I just did it and the thermometer is now working again.

I am going to be careful to store the thermometer so that it does not get turned on in storage to try to prolong the battery life.

If I was buying again I might look to see if I could figure out what sort of thermometer professional chefs buy, but all things considered this thermometer has served me reasonably well. If, as is likely, the professional grade thermometers are $40 and up, I might well buy this or a similar thermometer again. I don't use it enough to justify a really expensive thermometer.

I agree with the critiques that it is hardly INSTANT read, but it doesn't take too long. Also, the scrolling messages are kind of annoying.

 "Excellent - for a 1 time use thermometer" 2009-07-05
By P. S. Waters (Raleigh, NC)
I've tried 2 of these thermometers, and the same results with both. They work great the first time you take it out of the package. But won't work after that.

In both cases, I pulled the thermometer from the drawer for its second use, pressed the On/Off button and "ON" scrolls across the screen (normal so far). Only, instead of showing the temp, the screen flashes and "ON" scrolls across the screen. This continues, and there is now no way to turn off the thermometer or get it to respond in any way.

Tried changing the battery in the first unit, and the only thing that accomplished was wasting a few bucks on a new battery. No change in (the lack of) performance.

I tried emailing Taylor's customer service, and got no response (it's been 2 months now).

I'd definitely stay away from this thermometer, and probably all Taylor thermos if this is supposed to be their "higher end" line.

"shoddy construction, buttons poor, accuracy questionable" 2009-02-19
By R. C. Burnett
I strongly agree with points made in some of the other reviews:

1. Construction is shoddy/cheap

2. The on/off button only works some of the time. You have to push again and again to get the desired result. And, in fact, when I first opened the package the on/off button didn't work for about a half hour. I was about to drive right back to the store with it when suddenly and mysteriously it came to life.

3. The instructions for changing the battery are so vague (they don't point out where the screw is that you have to remove) that it's very easy to destroy the whole product while trying to get to the battery

4. While I haven't done the freezing/boiling accuracy tests that another reviewer did, I have noticed strange leaps in reading from one minute to the next which really don't seem plausible.

I'm returning this thing.

"Helpful and accurate, difficult to change battery" 2009-01-31
By Sara B. Tarpley (TN)
I had this thermometer for several years and loved it even though it took a few seconds to register the temperature. Then the battery failed, and I found the directions for accessing the battery compartment so vague that I destroyed it while trying to change the battery.
