 "Lasted a few minutes!" 2009-09-05
By Diane Kwak (Northern NJ)
I wanted to buy the Thermoworks (new and improved) thermometer, but amazon offered it through an outside vendor which charged a shipping fee... and this Tru Temp one seemed to have gotten okay reviews, so i went with the cheaper option.

i received it this past week and used it last night on our steaks. it started off okay -- i took it out of the packaging, removed the tab that the factory put in to keep the battery from being used, and proceeded to use it. i was able to set the correct temperature on the display and saw that the temperature reading was going down once the probe went from the counter to the meat. i thought it was going to be "set it and forget it" but when i looked over about 5 minutes later, the display was blank. i tried the power button but to no avail. i then thought it may be the battery, but even with a fresh one, the power wouldn't turn back on!

so unless you need a disposable thermometer that lasts only for a few minutes, move onto another brand!

 "Tru Temp Meat thermometer" 2009-07-12
By Old Salt (Saint Augustine, Florida)
This is my second try with the Tru Temp device and my luck was no better than with the first. The product is short lived. The cable connection to the probe is a weak spot and fails quickly. The replacement cost (cable and sensor only) is relatively low at about $5 but the hassle is annoying.

 "Great digital thermometer!" 2009-01-18
By Kevin (Albuquerque, NM United States)
I have 5 of these units, and have given two away as gifts. The price is great, and it has a 1 second refresh rate for quick measurements, and I couldn't be happier with the product or vendor. I use them for other things, such as radiator temp, and my favorite is attaching a long stick to the probe to check how the compost pile is cooking. It only uses one battery that lasts many months, even though it's on all the time. One thing I did is seal the interface between the probe and silicone sheath with Silicone RTV caulk, normally used for caulking bathrooms, etc. That caulk has a working temperature of 450 F, so should hold up. I didn't want it to possibly get inside the probe and damage the sensor, so that's why the seal. It also measures in either F, or C, which is a nice feature. The high/low alarm is handy, and cooking caramel, or other candy is just more fun when you can easily see the temperature, rather than squinting at the numbers on a typical glass candy thermometer...that is usually coated with what you're cooking. Get one of these, and it'll be hard to go back to the other thermometers!

"Accurate, inexpensive, wide temperature range" 2008-08-17
By Donald E. Fulton (Stoneham, MA USA)
Good product. Accurate, easy to use, inexpensive and wide temperature range. Many digital thermometer have a minimum temperature of 32F, so you cannot use them to check your freezer. This product has a range of -40F to 450F so it will do both oven and freezer. Tested in an ice water bath, it was only off about 1F, better then others I have measured. Comes with a neat magnetized plastic stand that holds it up at readable angle. Has a C/F switch on back.

Only minor negative is that while the upper range is advertized to be 450F, the documentation gives a slightly lower maximum temperature for the silicone cord. I'm writing this after using the product for a couple of months and I've lost the documentation, but my memory says the max cord temperataure was listed as 425F.
