"So far so good, and it works well." 2009-12-11
By Lawrence Wegeman, Jr. (Sunrise Beach, TX,)
I purchased this baking thermometer on amazon.con. It arrived in excellent condition and in a speedy manner. The thermometer takes a common battery #2032, also available on amazon. The thermometer reads in Centigrade or Fahrenheit and to the nearest 1/10th of a degree. So far, I have to say it is wonderful. A green light comes on, if the thermometer reads in the range of a finished loaf. I hope it lasts forever.

"A Real Workhorse, and Accurate" 2009-09-30
By Molly M (USA)
This is the third Taylor Dual Probe meat thermometer I've purchased -- one for me, which was co-opted to become a barbecueing essential for my husband, another for me to use with MY oven, and one for a gift. All three have given long service in toaster oven, Green Egg, Weber barbecue, and simmering pots. I tested my two in boiling water and against a professional mercury oven thermometer, and they are absolutely accurate through their range. They read quickly (more quickly than my supposed "instant read" dial probe), the probes are slim and sharp and don't disturb the meat (and don't make it lose juice if they need to be moved), and the cables are as heat resistant as the manufacturer claims. I do protect the cables with folded aluminum foil where the oven door or barbecue device's lid rests on them, but the one used for charcoal-grilling has survived many a squeeze in the ceramic Egg or the Weber.

The batteries last a long time and the probes are easy to clean. The setting and readouts can be a little confusing, especially if you inadvertently set the thermometer to an automatic temperature read, but the manual is good -- keep it where you can find it.

This thermometer has replaced many dollars' worth of probe thermometers, from the old spring-driven dial types to expensive digital versions -- it has so far been more accurate, more durable, more versatile, and easier to use than any of them. I just hope Taylor will keep making it, and keep making it as well!

 "Good looking and accurate" 2009-02-09
By Gourmet Foodie
I love the entire line of Connoisseur thermometers from this company. They're solidly built and, being by Taylor, accurate as can be. Love the silicone accents and the larger dials. They're better quality than others out there and I've found them in the top kitchen gourmet stores.

By Lablover (Pacific NW)
This does exactly what it is suppose to do and very accurately.I use this for monitoring the brewing of my tea but could use this just as well for coffee or any hot liquid. If you run cold water non any sealed dial it will fog up so I would suggest the other reviewer use some warmer water. The styling is better then anything I have seen in the market and the silicone accents let you handle the thermometer safely.

By A. Stutz (Quincy, CA)
If you're gonna call something "Connoissuer Line" (which is mis-spelled BTW), and charge $13 for it, you should at least make a quality product. I'm giving it 2 stars because I like the looks and the non-round dial. But, if I run water over the dial, it fogs up inside. Cheap.

"Good Thermometer, Terrible battery replacement" 2009-10-08
By Timothy Raleigh (Oakville, Ontario Canada)
The Taylor 508 thermometer was great until I had to change the battery. Unless you have a set of jewelers screwdrivers and are very careful forget about using this thermometer after the battery dies. It's not water tight, and it shorts out if any water or moisture gets inside. If you have to change the battery you need to remove two screws. One is underneath the rubber back plate and then there is another inside the unit holding the metal contact for the battery. Both these screws are tiny and difficult to put back into the unit. The battery contact plate itself is a strange contraption with two flanges that must be tucked under the frame that surrounds the battery. This cover must contact the body of the thermometer and therefor must be securely fastened with the tiny screw. After one battery change, the hole for the tiny screw that holds the battery cover on gets stripped rendering the unit useless. I did like the instant readout when this thermometer worked but there are better ones out there.

 "OK Thermometer" 2009-07-10
By B. Hooke (Rhode Island, USA)
I've had this thermometer for almost 2 years and it has served me reasonably well. It is not brilliant but it has gotten the job done. Then I took it out one day and it would not turn on. After much fiddling I figured out how to get at the battery, got a replacement battery and installed it. Still nothing. After a good bit of fiddling and taking the battery in and out it suddenly started working. For those who want to try to replace the battery here is how I did it:

1. Gently pry up the SOFT rubber cover on the underside of the thermometer. Slide this off the probe.

2. Unscrew the tiny Phillips head screw hidden under this cover.

3. Then gently pry the hard plastic back off the thermometer using a flat screwdriver inserted into the notch in the side of the thermometer.

4. Now unscrew the tiny Phillips head screw that holds down the metal cover over the battery and work that cover off so that you can take out the old battery.

5. Note which way up the battery is installed so you can install the new battery the same way up.

6. Install the new battery and screw down the metal battery holder.

7. Test the thermometer to make sure it turns on. If it does not, check to make sure the battery is in the right way up and that all internal screws are firmly tightened down (don't overdo it or you will probably strip the threads).

8. Once the thermometer turns on, reinstall the hard plastic back, the final screw, and lastly the rubber cover.

I get the sense that this battery is not really designed to be replaced but I just did it and the thermometer is now working again.

I am going to be careful to store the thermometer so that it does not get turned on in storage to try to prolong the battery life.

If I was buying again I might look to see if I could figure out what sort of thermometer professional chefs buy, but all things considered this thermometer has served me reasonably well. If, as is likely, the professional grade thermometers are $40 and up, I might well buy this or a similar thermometer again. I don't use it enough to justify a really expensive thermometer.

I agree with the critiques that it is hardly INSTANT read, but it doesn't take too long. Also, the scrolling messages are kind of annoying.

 "Excellent - for a 1 time use thermometer" 2009-07-05
By P. S. Waters (Raleigh, NC)
I've tried 2 of these thermometers, and the same results with both. They work great the first time you take it out of the package. But won't work after that.

In both cases, I pulled the thermometer from the drawer for its second use, pressed the On/Off button and "ON" scrolls across the screen (normal so far). Only, instead of showing the temp, the screen flashes and "ON" scrolls across the screen. This continues, and there is now no way to turn off the thermometer or get it to respond in any way.

Tried changing the battery in the first unit, and the only thing that accomplished was wasting a few bucks on a new battery. No change in (the lack of) performance.

I tried emailing Taylor's customer service, and got no response (it's been 2 months now).

I'd definitely stay away from this thermometer, and probably all Taylor thermos if this is supposed to be their "higher end" line.

"shoddy construction, buttons poor, accuracy questionable" 2009-02-19
By R. C. Burnett
I strongly agree with points made in some of the other reviews:

1. Construction is shoddy/cheap

2. The on/off button only works some of the time. You have to push again and again to get the desired result. And, in fact, when I first opened the package the on/off button didn't work for about a half hour. I was about to drive right back to the store with it when suddenly and mysteriously it came to life.

3. The instructions for changing the battery are so vague (they don't point out where the screw is that you have to remove) that it's very easy to destroy the whole product while trying to get to the battery

4. While I haven't done the freezing/boiling accuracy tests that another reviewer did, I have noticed strange leaps in reading from one minute to the next which really don't seem plausible.

I'm returning this thing.

 "Why can't I find a decent candy thermometer?" 2008-12-22
By Karen M. (California USA)
My "old" candy thermometer lasted 30 years. Then last year I bought some brand I can't remember and it was fine for one batch of peanut brittle and then didn't work again. So this year I bought the Taylor 509 Connoissuer. I got it to fit the pan okay so the stem didn't touch the bottom of the pan, but with the first batch of peanut brittle, when the bubbling liquid reached around 260-265 degrees, I was stirring and suddenly it shot way OVER the 300 degree mark! I took the pot off the burner and the batch was okay, so I thought it was a little weird, but since it turned out.. no problem. A few days later I made the second batch. When the batch reached 265 degrees, I was stirring continuously, and kept stirring, and the needle never went any higher. I've made peanut brittle enough times to know that when the liquid starts to turn a golden color, it's over 300 degrees and needs to be removed from the heat! Had I not done that, I would have a pot of burned peanut brittle, and maybe a ruined pot as well. I'm very disgusted that this thermometer wouldn't even last through 2 batches, even though I was super gentle when using it and when cleaning and storing it. Because of this, I will not buy the Taylor brand again.

"Poor clip design, mediocre accuracy" 2008-12-08
By David Stone (California)
I also had big problems with the clip being undersized and not strong enough for the thermometer. I couldn't get the thermometer to sit at anywhere near straight up and down at the edge of an All-Clad LTD 3-Quart Saucier Pan

Additionally, this thermometer registered 205 degrees in a pan of boiling water (which registered 212 on an Original Super-Fast Thermapen Instant Read Thermometer (Red) by Thermoworks.

And a final point with the product description. It neglects to mention the following from the back of the packaging: "The thermometer tip should be at least 2 1/2" into the liquid".

"Not a good choice for peanut brittle" 2008-11-26
By In bathroom bliss (Silver Spring, MD United States)
I burned the first batch because the thermometer was not down far enough into the sugar. I adjusted the clip and the probe was in the middle of the pan. It read the temp OK for bringing the sugar up to 295, but once I put the butter, nuts, etc in the mixture and had to keep stirring, it stopped giving an accurate measurement. Given the weight of the thermometer head, this would work best in a very tall pot.

 "Candy Thermometer" 2008-05-29
By S. C. Dominguez (Dallas, TX USA)
There's really not much to it when you consider a candy/deep-fry thermometer. It needs to be functional, accurate and durable. I find that this thermometer succeeds in these areas. It is also easy to clean and easier to read than the typical cage thermometer. Unlike the other reviewer, I didn't experience any problems with the thermometer resting on my deep-fryer. I found the design to be more than adequate. Unfortunately, it is made in China, but I looked around for months for one that was made elsewhere and couldn't find one. The Taylor cage thermometers are also made in China, but if you read the reviews here at amazon and other places, you'll see that there are issues with the painted numbers on the scale wearing off. No doubt this thermometer is constructed by the same quality-indifferent folks, however nothing on this particular device needs to be submerged in the oil/candy except for the tip of the probe.

I really wish this was made in the USA, and that's the only complaint I have.

"Looks fancy, but won't last" 2009-10-07
By DS (Oakland, CA)
I've had two of these and both quit working within a few weeks of use. The case is not water-proof, not even water resistant. The rubber grips on either side of the case become dislodged and will not reseat properly. Chaning the battery may not even be possible, although neither of the two I had would work long enogh to put a dent in the battery life. Look for something more basic and durable.

 "Hurts like hell!" 2009-07-08
By ClarkstonCracker (Clarkston, MI)
Whoever designed this thermometer should be fired. While it is very easy to read and mildly comfortable, it is really easy to insert to far. There should be a rubber stopper, or maybe a depth restrictive option to prevent damage to the colon. I wanted to verify my temperature before making an unnecessary trip to my doctor, and I ended up in the ER with stitches in a very uncomfortable spot. My friends now call me "prison boy" because I walk funny

 "It's good to know" 2008-01-14
By R. B. Hipp
I received this thermometer as a gift. It is amazing how warm we drink our Red Wine without knowing it. Wine taste best when served at the correct temperature. Cellar temperature is in the 60-65 degree range. Most people usually drink it at room temperature, which is 72-82 degree range. It's a fun useful gadget that makes your wine taste better.

Also, I like that it has a chart that tells you how cool to serve your wine. Also, you can use it as an instant read thermometer. My only complaint is that it can be tricky to turn on and off.

"Impossible to attach to rack" 2009-09-07
By karker (Cypress, CA USA)
It may or may not be accurate, but I can't attach it to my over rack because the clip is too wide. I would have to do it sideways, which means I would have to open the oven and let out all of the hot air.

Customer Buzz
 "Too hard to read" 2008-10-13
By jen-marie (Virginia, United States)
This product appears to have solid construction. There are little rubbery (probably silicone) things on the sides which are probably to allow you to take it out of the oven when it is hot, but I don't feel comfortable attempting to do that. The little stand/hangar thing that you can use to attach it to your oven rack would be fine for racks with bars spaced about 1/2" to 1" apart, but unfortunately mine are about 1 1/4" apart which means that it only partly works, and partly wants to fall through. If the bars on the rack were farther apart it wouldn't work at all.

I have no reason to doubt its accuracy. (If I had another reliable way of telling the temperature in my oven, I wouldn't have bought this one.)

But I feel that if you have to take the oven thermometer out of the oven to read it, it's not easy to read. Of course you can't read it through the oven door, but even with the oven open, when you bend down to peer at it, various shadows make it pretty much impossible to read and therefore useless. The temperatures I'm usually looking for (300-400F) are in the most shadowed part. I'm going to have to buy another oven thermometer.

Probably if you had an oven that was up at eye level, this thermometer would be fine, but if your oven is under your stove, you may want to find something else.

"Hard to read, dubious about accuracy" 2008-07-18
By Michael Scriven (Point Reyes, CA USA)
I bought this to replace an older Taylor. It's premium priced, but in fact badly designed; small numbers on the scale, soon obscured by baked on, can't get off stains, and illegible through the oven door. All others available have similar problems, except Sunbeam, but it's inaccurate, and the 5 Taylor's models seem often inaccurate. So much for the old standard! Are any of the digitals any better? Especially the remote ones? I am going to buy a few and find out.

 "Accurate; Easy to Read" 2008-04-02
By J. B Kraft (Palestine, TX United States)
I purchased this product for my wife because cooking times in our oven suddenly started to vary from expectations, and I began to believe the thermostat was the problem. First of all, the dial is very large and easy to read (for young eyes), but we find it's a good idea to eyeball the needle position for the desired temperature on the dial, then clip the thermometer onto a rack (it attaches and detaches easily), and preheat the oven. The angle of the dial vis-a-vis the clip swivels easily, and the thermometer is easily visible through the oven window, but you can't read the temperature (because of dingy oven glass), so that's where pre-heating eyeballing is handy. The clip attaches solidly and releases easily. The product has a nice "solid" feel, and is comfortable in the hand with the silicone grips being useful to keep from dropping in. I would keep it on top of the stove, rather than leaving it in the oven all the time, because that way you make sure the glass face is cleaned frequently. Once you have predetermined the reading you need, it is very easy to just glance at the needle and confirm the temperature is correct. The actual temperature readings are indistinct viewed through the oven door though.

 "OK, but not perfect" 2007-01-26
By rsb (Vienna, WV)
I am somewhat dissapointed in this device; but I've not found an oven thermometer anywhere that is 1) easy to read IN the oven, 2) able to remain clean for a long time, and 3) easy to attach or balance on the oven racks. This one has very good accuracy and a large dial, but it will NOT remain where I put it in the oven. The darn thing makes me get down on hands and knees to read it, all the while letting the heat escape from the oven. Save yourself a lot of grief and spring for the exterior thermometer type with the internal probe.

"Keep a check on your refrigerator temperatures." 2008-04-02
By J. B Kraft (Palestine, TX United States)
This thermometer seems well designed and constructed. It has what seems to be a silicone covered foot that sits on the shelf where you put it. I bought it as paired with the similar oven thermometer, and the readings in our side-by-side checked out at exactly 40 degrees in the frig and 8 degrees in the freezer, so we'll want to adjust the freezer down a tad.

All in all, it's very easy to read, and is a good way to assure maximum food safety and minmimum energy wastage. I think it's quite accurate and fits in the hand very well. It's heavy enough not to tip over easily. If you're like us and have multiple refrigerators, it's easily moved from one to another.
