I have owned several of these and given a few away as gifts. I LOVE how well they work when they are brand new so when mine failed I bought new ones assuming I just got a lemon. THEY ARE ALL LEMONS. My observation of several units is that the average service life is from 3 to 6 uses. Sometimes a new probe fixes the problem ($20 ea) sometimes nothing (including hitting the reset button) helps. Look at other product reviews on different web sites; they all complain about how quickly the unit fails. You may also notice that several different brands all look alike with the same screen indicating that they are all the same unit sold under different brand names.



With all the bad reviews of these things the firms selling these things should consider the ethics of selling something this expensive that only works a few times. Unfortunately the other brands of remote thermometers, from what I have seen, all seem to fail after only a few uses. This is a real drag because when they work, they work great, and I guess that's why I am so annoyed.

My parents bought this for me for my birthday a couple of years ago. I only used it for grilling about 4 times. I grilled with charcoal and I was nervous about using it around that much heat. I had no cause to be because it performed perfectly. The last time I remember using it was to test to see that my freezer and 'fridge were at the right settings. I just got a George Foreman indoor/outdoor grill and thought it would be perfect with that. I found the probe but I can't find the receiver! It must still be in the 'frige in my old apartment! I have no clue. But I am going to buy another one! Sorry mom and dad!

This product failed after several months of use. As a part time chef I rely upon an accurate grill temperature. Shortly after the first use I detected moisture in the interior. The temperature was slow to move either up or down the scale. Finally it froze up and is useless. I should have bought a professional grade to start. My error.

While I find the thermometer accurate,the ability to read the temperature is difficult because of the small lettering. Also, the interior of the glass surface clouds over while in use and makes it completly unusable during the cooking process. As a result, I found the item was a waste of my money and would not recommend the product.

I've had this thermometer for a while now and rarely use it. Not because I don't need it, but like others have mentioned the glass on it becomes very dark on the inside from what I believe to be smoke. This thermometer worked well the first couple of times I used it. Then one night I left it on the grill when I turned the BBQ on full blast to burn off the grease. It showed about 600F then I turned everything off. The next day it had black lines inside the glass like if it was drawn on by a magic marker. I tried cleaning it with different cleaners, but the damage was inside or on the glass.

I've used many of these wireless thermometers in my frequent barbecuing. This one is the best. The usual point of failure is the wire running from the probe to the transmitter, but Oregon Scientific sells replacements, and most manufacturers don't. The repetition of the "spoken" reminders was annoying, until I discovered that they would stop if you press the center button. Be prepared to change the temperature settings for various meats, which is easy to do. (They are too high for my taste). So far, results from use have been outstanding.

Great product with many food types and settings. Only gave it 4 stars since the two units do not synch up immediately (would of given it 4.7 stars if allowed). It is not difficult for them to snych up, you just need to read the manual.
