 "Doesn't fit all oven racks" 2008-12-25

I just received this thermometer today. It seems to read the temp ok (my oven is pretty new, so still pretty accurate). However, the clip does not fit around the rungs of my oven racks - the clip is much too small. My husband wired the clip onto the oven rack and then inserted the thermometer into the clip, and that seemed to work. But that leaves out the option of mounting the thermometer on top of the rack - I can only have it hanging below the rack. It makes it a bit difficult to read. I'd send it back, but I need it for some baking I'm doing tonight and need the oven to set at exactly the right temp. I have a 2005 Frigidaire professional series gas range.

Since it is Insta-Read, it is not meant to leave in the meat while cooking. It gives an accurate temperature within a few seconds. You don't have to wait for several minutes like the smaller thermometers.

I am getting older and do not see as well as I used to and with the large dial I can see this without my glasses. This thermometer quickly and accurately shows me the temperature of food. That's especially helpful when I'm trying to figure out whether to take beef off the grill to make sure it's medium rare instead of medium. It works a lot better than the cheaper thermometers I have used in the past where I had to hold them in the steak for what seemed like a minute or so, while my hand was scorching from the heat.

I'm not sure why people would pay 5x more for a quick read digital thermometer but this little guy does the job superbly. Cooking all kinds of meats is now a joy rather then a burden. The wife never complains about her steak being too rare. And any good chef who still uses a palm test for meats is kidding themselves this is the way to go.



The temp reads accurately and within 3-4 seconds. Would be nice to have a back lite in the future as getting temps on the grille at night can prove tricky but thats only a minor gripe and I don't know of any other thermometer that offers this option anyway.

I use this thermometer several times daily beginning with measuring the water temperature of water for both coffee and green tea. Correct temperature is very necessary when preparing green tea. It is also used during family baking. When a problem with my older unit arose, the company sent replacements (twice) with absolutely no problem. I've had this thermometer for about 8 months now, and it worked fine until a couple weeks ago when it just stopped working. It's possible that it's just the probe, but since getting a new probe costs almost as much as buying a new unit, I probably won't try it.



I didn't find the ability to specify the type of meat all that helpful, since you couldn't specify bone-in or not. The temperature it goes to automatically seems to be the bone-in temperature, and since I rarely use any meat with bones it it, I had to manually set the temperature anyway (or have overcooked, dry chicken, which is what I use a thermometer to avoid)



The unit makes a loud, annoying whine every time you turn it on. Not annoying enough to keep me from using it, but enough that I wouldn't buy it again.



I did find the wide temperature range handy (the primary reason I got this model) and it comes with a little clip for the side of the pan so you can suspend the tip of the probe in oil without worrying that it will slip to the side or bottom.

I have ordered two of these. I thought the first one might have gotten wet or something. The second developed the same issue with in an even shorter period of time. I was very careful to take care of it. I recommend you do not purchase this item.

Liked this unit when I bought it, but the fifth time I used it, it read the ambient temperature as 120 degrees when I took it out of the drawers. I live in Alaska; the aforementioned day was all of 65 degrees. With e-coli and heaven knows what else flying around the world, a good cook needs straight data, not electronics having hallucinations.



When I called for help the customer service number listed in the instruction pamphlet, I got a 'directory service' voice-mail offering redirection for $4.95. This, to me, smacks of a scam. The number is 800 338-5594. IT'S toll-free...dial it before you buy.



Don't buy this. It works great the first four times, but, if it is intended to be disposable, that should be included in the product description.



Again, DON'T BUY THIS. No customer support, no recourse when it fails.

Wish it was a little bit longer, but it works as advertised. Quick to read the temperature.



It's made cooking much MUCH easier. It really should be a kitchen essential.



It takes a while to learn where to poke to get the most accurate temperature readings, but it seems to do a pretty good job of detecting right at the tip. With a bit of trial and error, you'll wonder how you ever lived without one.



BTW, the suggested temperatures that come with most thermometers will result in most meat being overcooked. Safety/flavor trade-off I guess.

This is the new version of the CDN Proaccurate Stainless Digital Thermometer, which is very well reviewed on Amazon. That model (DTQ450) has been discontinued and replaced with this model (DTQ450X). This is the first quick-read thermometer I've owned for cooking. If you don't have a quick-read, I highly recommend it. Traditional thermometers can take up to a minute to read temperature. This CDN model provides a temperature reading within about 2-3 seconds. That is extremely convenient compared to a traditional thermometer. The form factor is fairly nice. The thermometer is small (6.5" long), and the readout is not too big, maybe a little larger than a quarter. The buttons are easy to press and the readout is easy to view. The stem is made of stainless steel and it feels fairly solidly built. It can be switched between metric and English units as well.



When actually using the thermometer, don't stick the entire stem into your food like I did for a week. It will give you an inaccurate reading. Just place the very tip of the stem in your food about 1/2" in and it will read. The only possible problem I can see with this is that you might not be able to check the temperature in the very middle of your food if you have a thick piece of meat.

I made a mistake and bought one of the CDN ProAccurate Stainless Digital Thermometers on eBay (instead of Amazon like I usually do). It must have been an older model because it had a red tip on the end of the probe. The thermometer was D.O.A. and I could only get readings of --- F. The eBay seller said I could get a refund if I paid for return shipping (I already paid $16.96 and didn't want to go through the hassle and expense.)



I gave CDN a call on their toll free number and immediately talked to a live and very pleasant lady. I told her what happened. She apologized and asked for my address. After, she said that a new unit would be shipped the next day, and thanked me for my business. The new thermometer arrived by UPS three days later. I asked customer service where I should return the defective unit. She said to just toss it out because the problem I described was common for the model with the red tips. Now, how wonderful is that?



The new thermometer received from CDN was different than the one that I had received originally (missing the red probe tip). I checked the calibration with ice water at exactly 32 deg. F, so I didn't have to recalibrate it.



This is a very fast and accurate thermometer (about three seconds). I really like this thermometer very much. It is only a few weeks old, so I can't attest to its durability. However, the thermometer has a full five year guarantee from a company with World Class customer service. I am very impressed with CDN and plan on buying several more of these as gifts for my cook friends.
