"A Real Workhorse, and Accurate" 2009-09-30
By Molly M (USA)
This is the third Taylor Dual Probe meat thermometer I've purchased -- one for me, which was co-opted to become a barbecueing essential for my husband, another for me to use with MY oven, and one for a gift. All three have given long service in toaster oven, Green Egg, Weber barbecue, and simmering pots. I tested my two in boiling water and against a professional mercury oven thermometer, and they are absolutely accurate through their range. They read quickly (more quickly than my supposed "instant read" dial probe), the probes are slim and sharp and don't disturb the meat (and don't make it lose juice if they need to be moved), and the cables are as heat resistant as the manufacturer claims. I do protect the cables with folded aluminum foil where the oven door or barbecue device's lid rests on them, but the one used for charcoal-grilling has survived many a squeeze in the ceramic Egg or the Weber.

The batteries last a long time and the probes are easy to clean. The setting and readouts can be a little confusing, especially if you inadvertently set the thermometer to an automatic temperature read, but the manual is good -- keep it where you can find it.

This thermometer has replaced many dollars' worth of probe thermometers, from the old spring-driven dial types to expensive digital versions -- it has so far been more accurate, more durable, more versatile, and easier to use than any of them. I just hope Taylor will keep making it, and keep making it as well!

 " Very dissapointed!" 2009-03-14
By Vincent Britton (South Florida)
I would recommend against buying this model.

The probe is pretty big, I assume that is why it takes SOOO long for it to read. It takes at least 10 seconds to get a reading. If you need the infared take a look at the Taylor Professional 9306, it looks exactly the same as this but has a much thinner probe.

If I had to do it over, I'd get the thermapen model as it is known to be fast and a seperate infared model.

My wife threw away the packaging, or I'd return this model!

I am very disappointed in this very expensive thermometer!

 "Efficient and accurate" 2009-01-19
By Gregory Motes (Seoul)
I have a very good probe thermometer with timers, warnings, etc., but when I want a quick glance at the temp, I blast it with the infrared thermometer. It is great for telling the temperature inside my toaster oven (where I don't have enough room for a regular oven thermometer). I use this a lot when I have a recipe that calls for boiling the item for a certain amount of time (just to give me an indication of how close the liquid is to boiling). This may not be indispensable - but is a very nice luxury to have in the kitchen.

 "Sooooooooooo.... disappointed!" 2008-12-05
By Linda (Oregon, USA)
I got this themometer as a Christmas gift last year after years of frustrating candy-making trying to read the mercury through foggy glass on those cheap yellow-capped varieties. Today was the big day! I was kicking off my holiday goodie-making, and planned to use my nifty new CDN Combo Probe. I clipped it on the sauce pan and set the temperature to signal when it reached the "softball" stage. Everything appeared to be functioning correctly until the temp reached around 217. After that, though the sugary syrup was obviously getting hotter and browner, the temp. readout on my nifty new CDN Combo Probe was DECREASING...down to the 170's! I rifled through my gadget drawer and pulled out a glass tube thermometer and the mercury quickly shot up to 250+ degrees. I tried my nifty new CDN Combo Probe twice more in other recipes with similar results. It never read more than 217 before it started counting down. It's too late for me to return this overpriced clock/timer now. Bummer.... If you're hoping to use this thermometer for something that gets hotter than 200 degrees, save your money! Back to the yellow-capped variety for me!

"It works. . .so far" 2008-12-08
By T. T. Wong (Cypress, CA USA)
Having owned several items like this before, I've always had problems w/the probe burning out after several uses.

So far, it' works after one use. My only complaint so far is that the temp seems to read too high. Unlike the previous reviewer, when I compared the results from this probe to my pocket thermometer, this probe read too high.

I will try it again soon and post an update as soon as I get the results in.

 "Broke quickly, no warranty" 2009-04-27
By Gift Crad Recipient (Boston)
The probe worked well for the few times I used it - but then it had an electrical problem where it flashed error messages and finally stopped working. I contacted the company and they told me there is no warranty. They said it is a "quality assurance" product - which means it is guaranteed to work out of the box, but with no warranty after. Nothing like guaranteeing a product will work when you buy it. It would be funny but for the fact the probe is so expensive.

 "Good product" 2009-04-11
By G. Nelson (Los Angeles, CA United States)
The thermometer works pretty well. The probe was accurate within two or three degrees, and the infrared was accurate within two degrees. It's easy and fun to use. The only change I would suggest is that the probe would read the temperature quicker because it takes upwards of 10 seconds to get a stable reading.

 "A pleasant mistake" 2009-02-24
By J. Jelinek (IL United States)
I had used Amazon to order the BonJour Culinary Laser Thermometer. What arrived from the seller was the BonJour Chef's Laser Probe Combo Thermometer. I worked things out with the seller and kept the item.

I tried out the unit and found it does a very good job of sensing temprature via infrared. I tested on boiling water since it boils at 212 degrees F. The thermometer read accurately within a degree or so. I cooked a steak in a cast iron pan. The infrared sensed the temprature of the pan so I knew it was good and hot to sear. Seared both sides then into the oven. When it came out of the oven I was thankful for the probe thermometer. I cooked the steak just how I like it and didn't have to use two different pieces of equipment.

As I cook more with Lodge cast iron I needed a way to tell the surface temprature before I put food in the pan or camp oven. This is an excellent tool to have in my culinary arsenal.

"This one has it all" 2006-12-27
By Overzeetop (Virginia)
I've only had two days to play with this thermometer, but it certainly seems like a winner. The instructions are sometimes wrong with regard to how to operate the unit (you must press the _trigger_ and the up/down arrows to activate the laser/lcd backlight, not the _mode_ button and up/down), but once you figure it out you'll throw away the booket anyway. It does have high/low alarms (for emissive...not sure about the probe) and will do a high/low/average reading set.

I do not have a reliable way to determine whether the emissive temperature is accurate, but it appears to track closely with two of my other probe thermometers for cold-warm temperatures, and is in the right range for oven temperatures and, well, anything I could find to determine the temperature of. The probe seems equally accurate. Both are quick. The probe is comparable to my polder-look-alike, probably a bit faster to be honest. The emissive temp can be checked in a second or less, and can be set to continuously monitor (which would be useful with the alarms and the hold mode described below). When the probe is off, the unit sleeps after 60 seconds, with the probe on it will sleep after a few minutes. According to the manual, the unit will stay active for 1 hour with the "hold" mode engaged for continuous monitoring of emissive temps.

The laser is cute, but not really necesssary, as the sensitivity cone is 1:11, so at 11 inches away, the unit will read a 1" spot. Not really that hard to aim, and I would think the 1" parallax between the laser and thermal lens would cause error for really precise measurements.

The emissivity is adjustable over a very wide range. I believe you can set it as low as 0.10. The default is 0.95. Organics (per the manual) tend to be around 0.97 or 0.98, and it can be set as high as either 0.99 or 1.00 (not sure about the 1.00).

The unit seems sturdy, and the manual claims 140hrs continuous use on the 2 batteries. Obviously, having had it for two days I can't comment on battery life. Otherwise, its been a ball to play with.

 "Died after 6 months" 2009-09-30
By Susan Sto Helit (Rochester, NY USA)
Piece of junk. Worked just fine at first, very nice to have. But after 6 months - about five uses - it stopped working entirely. All the segments of the display turn on when I switch on the device, nothing happens when I push a button, even with the so-far-unused second probe. Fresh batteries made no difference. Is it really too much to expect an electronic device to last more than six months? I hate buying cr$p just to throw it in a landfill.

Customer Buzz
 "Sorry I bought ir" 2009-06-04
By E. Ahrendt
Consumer Reports rated this model as the best, so I bought one last year to use with my Weber Smoker. After one or two times using it, it stopped working. Both probes read on LL or HH. If I would twist and hold the wire, I would sometimes get a reading, but this was rare. I previously owned a Maveric for several years, and it was great.

Customer Buzz
"Good product, has some drawbacks" 2009-05-26
By John Paul L. Finan (Wisconsin, USA)
I like this thermometer, and it works. I do wish it was a bit different, though. First off, the actual electronic part is very delicate. I bought one and set it on the stove while it timed a pork roast cooking at 325. The stove top was warm to the touch, but not at all hot. It's just a regular Kenmore flat top electric stove - at only 325 inside, the top really wasn't that hot. It couldn't have been 150 degrees on there. Regardless, the Polder's screen went all wacky and after that, the power button was simply jammed in one position and it wouldn't turn off even after it sat overnight. It was totally dead after that. I sent it back and got another and have been very careful with it so far. I think a thermometer ought to be able to handle mild warmth from normal kitchen use, but the Polder can not.

I don't think this design is terribly nice to use, though the basic temp function is fine. I wish there was some way to shut the thing up when I'm setting the custom temperature, which is often because the included temperature presets aren't very useful. As you set the degrees from 175 down to 150, each degree makes a super-loud, alarm-volume squawk. You can't zip through them, so you have sit there pressing the alarm button twenty five times. It woke my roommate up up one time. He thought he better get up and check the stove in case I was burning something. Why does it need to blare that loud with button presses when the user is standing three inches away?

Since this is about the cheapest model there is, I guess it's okay. More expensive models must be more durable and less annoying. The magnet on the back is handy, the probes are long and the temperature function does work nicely. Overall, an average product.

 "Problem Probe" 2009-05-09
By Dominick Ciolino
I feel cheated. The probe did not work even on its first use. I placed the probe in the middle of a brisket I was grilling and within a few minutes the probe read HH. I changed probes and within a few minutes it again read HH. Nowhere in the instruction manuel did it explain what HH means, but it obviously means it doesn't work, because the probe doesn't. I will be requesting a refund.

"Works well on SMOKER too" 2009-04-25
By Q. Karels (Center of the Universe)
I purchased this to allow me to monitor both the smoker temperature, and the meat internal temperature. It works great! I didn't notice that the instructions say "don't use on a smoker", until I got it, but since a smoker's temperature is less than around 250 degrees, much less than an oven's, I decided to use it. I have a cylindrical smoker with an electric element in the bottom. I laid one probe on the upper grill, and the other in the center of my meat. It worked perfectly. I was able to control the smoker temperature, and take the meat off when it was perfectly completed. The advantage of this sensor is that you do not need to remove the lid to the smoker to measure the meat, as we all know, that results in loss of heat and fluctuation of temperature.

Definitely recommend this product.

"Worked fine until it didn't" 2009-09-23
By Joy J. (Portland, OR USA)
I've had this thermometer for about 8 months now, and it worked fine until a couple weeks ago when it just stopped working. It's possible that it's just the probe, but since getting a new probe costs almost as much as buying a new unit, I probably won't try it.

I didn't find the ability to specify the type of meat all that helpful, since you couldn't specify bone-in or not. The temperature it goes to automatically seems to be the bone-in temperature, and since I rarely use any meat with bones it it, I had to manually set the temperature anyway (or have overcooked, dry chicken, which is what I use a thermometer to avoid)

The unit makes a loud, annoying whine every time you turn it on. Not annoying enough to keep me from using it, but enough that I wouldn't buy it again.

I did find the wide temperature range handy (the primary reason I got this model) and it comes with a little clip for the side of the pan so you can suspend the tip of the probe in oil without worrying that it will slip to the side or bottom.

 "Worked for Three Weeks" 2009-07-16
By M. A. Bradac (Nowhere, Alaska)
Liked this unit when I bought it, but the fifth time I used it, it read the ambient temperature as 120 degrees when I took it out of the drawers. I live in Alaska; the aforementioned day was all of 65 degrees. With e-coli and heaven knows what else flying around the world, a good cook needs straight data, not electronics having hallucinations.

When I called for help the customer service number listed in the instruction pamphlet, I got a 'directory service' voice-mail offering redirection for $4.95. This, to me, smacks of a scam. The number is 800 338-5594. IT'S toll-free...dial it before you buy.

Don't buy this. It works great the first four times, but, if it is intended to be disposable, that should be included in the product description.

Again, DON'T BUY THIS. No customer support, no recourse when it fails.
