This thermometer is great for turkey, pork and beef especially for larger items like roasts you select medium rare and set the alarm an just wait until the temperature reaches the desired doneness of the meat and your done. It also is a great help for turkey when you don't have the pop-up or even when you do it has the alarm which alerts you when your meal is cook exactly right.

many recipes require temps of 500 degrees...
this thermometer only measures to 400 degrees... the directions say it will not work over 400 degrees because it will harm the termometer...
i say this is a ripoff...an oven thermo should measure temps that an oven is capable of...
so...i DO NOT recommend this termo...

If you've used traditional meat thermometers, you had two choices. You had the type that you left in the meat, which meant opening the oven door on occasion to check the status. Or you used a newer instant read model, that still required checking the progress.
This model stays in the food like a traditional model, but can be viewed from outside. The magnetic back lets you stick it on a metal surface, such as an oven (preferably a cool part and definitely outside!) or any nearby metal appliance. It lets you set the temperature and gives you an alarm when things are ready.
My first probe did not last long, but I was able to exchange it and the new one has been in use for a long time. It serves as a reminder to be careful, and it's possible that better care of the first one might have kept it from failing.
A problem is that if you can't get enough of it inside the food, then the heat transfers from the exposed part of the probe to give you a false reading. So it's good for a turkey or a roast, but keep the instant read model around for steaks and smaller items. If the temperature starts creeping up unexpectedly fast, you might need to find a better position for the probe.
Taking the probe out of the food shows me the room temperature or outdoor temperature so quickly that I have no doubt about its responsiveness. This doubles quite well as an instant read thermometer, for those circumstances when you need one.

This is a very accurate meat thermometer. Easy to use. Easy instructions. The only down side is the sensivity of the probe to heat over 430 degress in the oven. The probe burns out. It would be great if amazon offered the probes seperately.

This thermometer does the job you can expect from a thermometer-it gives you the temperature whithin whatever you are cooking. If this thing was working I can't see any reason why not giving it a 5, but since mine broke after a few months (like previous reviewer)I can't give it more than 1 star. $20 doesn't seem to be much but for a small piece of electronics I think that you should get more for your money.
